Get WOKE: Alamo Myths Fuel Firing of Kate Smith
The agents of the slavery dream in Texas were Sam Houston, David Crockett, James Bowie, William Travis, Lorenzo de Zavala, Stephen F. Austin, and others. All of the real history of the Alamo is being avoided and attacks are being belched out. According to the Texas Tribune, “The president of the Alamo Trust, which manages the historic site, resigned after Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick called on her to do as much over views she expressed in a doctoral dissertation in 2023.” Like an old rusty cannon, Dan Patrick’s tantrum is a familiar theme of those trying to rewrite what actually happened at the Alamo and its relationship with slavery, Native Americans, and stolen land. The mythical Alamo is a place where hero worship is at hallucinogenic levels. It was not about disagreeing with Republicans per say, but about wanting to cling onto to a discredited history that has been told for generations. That mythical history is easily proven false.
Kate Rogers, the now former CEO, submitted her resignation and the debate will not stop because Dan Patrick wants a half-told story. Patrick sent a letter to the Alamo Trust’s board of directors about Rogers’ writings that he claimed were “incompatible with the telling of the history of the battle of the Alamo.” He must have went to great lengths to look for a dissertation written 2 years ago or had some Alamo fanatic look that up. Rogers had a lot of feel good and warm and fuzzy remarks upon leaving but was no real friend of the real story of the Alamo and the central role of slavery. While in charge, she routinely argued with people who wanted other aspects of the Alamo story told. So, who knows why she spoke one way in a dissertation and acted another way with committee members. I guess forked tongue may have been at work.
The Alamo Trust board announced former Secretary of State Hope Andrade would be the organization’s new president and we wonder what kind of erasures will happen with her. Patrick posted on social media, that Rogers described the competing politics of Republican state leaders, who want the 1836 battle to be the primary focus of the Alamo’s redevelopment. That would be a big mistake, as most of the Alamo defenders ran from the Alamo and some tried to surrender. Only 60 to 80 stayed inside the Alamo and all were killed in about 20 to 30 minutes according to primary source documents. Roughly 120 ran and most were killed outside the wall close to where river Center Mall is now located.
The Alamo story is a liar’s paradise because many accounts are inaccurate and serve to promote a myth that denies the role of slavery. Primary source evidence reveals that many defenders surrendered or fled and the battle was motivated by the preservation of slavery. All of the Alamo defenders believed in slavery and those in positions of power, like Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, owned slaves. When Texas was stolen from Mexico, hordes of slave owners, and those wanting to be slave owners, flooded into Texas like hungry hyenas to use slaves to eventually produce almost 3 million bales of cotton. Later, by bringing in more slaves, almost 5 million bales of the crop would be produced. Thus, cheap land, stolen land, with large numbers of enslaved people, became the backbone of the slave plantation class. This class of greedy men are who prompted the Alamo battle so that they could become the “gentlemen” of the South.
Looks like “WOKE” philosophy will win the day as there is enough evidence to show what we have learns is mostly all lies or myth. The San Antonio Current was quoted as saying, “Patrick’s tantrum is the latest in a series of efforts by Republican Texas leaders to fire, intimidate or ostracize people for expressing views that don’t fall in line with the party’s views.” Actually, there was only one day of real fighting and it was at night.
A social media post was removed honoring Native Americans in tribute to Indigenous Peoples Day after pressure from Republican Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham. Texas Scorecard publisher Michael Quinn Sullivan, who brags about only being “a fifth generation Texan,” while Native People have been in Texas for 600 generations, seems to be an instigator in this mess. The Texas land Commissioner was quoted as saying “This is frankly unacceptable and it has been deleted. Woke has no place at the Alamo.” There is much WOKE to tell, so I leave the reader with this racist quote by Sam Houston, “The vigor of the descendants of the sturdy North will never mix with the phlegm of the indolent Mexicans….” (1835).
